The Coming Of Age Of Cell Phones

By Isaura Downey

When cell phones were first offered to the public, it was the novelty of the idea that was the largest draw. They could do nothing more than send and receive calls and quite often they did not do that very well. Calls were easily interrupted and the devices themselves were large and not easily transported.

As mobile phones became more popular, they also became smaller and easier to carry. Transmission towers were added all over the world so these phones could be used in more places. The idea of portable telephones was quickly catching on and people were grabbing them up like candy.

Some of the first big sellers to hit the market were simply on a pay as you talk program. Minutes were purchased and used and when needed, more minutes were purchased. Soon the pocket telephone became passe as other features were added. Makers knew that if they could do more to pique the interest of the consumer, the higher their sales would be.

The more advanced a mobile device became the more it had to offer. No longer was it a portable phone but a mini computer. Your cell phone had now graduated college and had an education never thought possible. The item that was a luxury was now commonplace and most could not remember how they got along without them.

The world is inundated with the smart phone. Any number of them are now available to the consumer. Even within the same companies, endless programs are offered to suit specific needs. The cell phone that simply allows you to converse is nearly non-existent. To add to the allure of the smart phone, most companies now offering the family plan, whereby one monthly price allows an entire family to stay in touch with each other at no additional charge.

From the workplace; to college classes; and in daily life, these small units performed wonders. They could take pictures, deposit and withdraw bank funds, and make surfing the web a snap. We no longer had to travel the world because the world was coming to us.

As for program cost, they are too numerous to mention. The best advice offered is to shop around. Make sure you understand if your monthly fee covers all aspects that this particular cell phone offers. The lower the cost per month, the more likely you will be charged extra for excess minutes above those offered by the plan. Ask numerous questions and do not enter any program until all questions have been answered satisfactorily. Cell phones are now a convenience that very few wish to live without.
