Completing An Oracle Conversion On Small Business Databases

By Donnie D. Prill

Lots of businesses have made the decision to complete an oracle conversion in recent years. This is all fine and good, but should it matter if the database is open source or not? Open source has in fact, many plusses that open databases have compared to closed ones. An open source database software is essentially open to the business and can be maintained by anyone. Overall, open source software is more dependable and stable, because it has been tested and updated by many different people.

Small businesses will also be privy to every detail of how their open source software functions. That alone is a huge benefit to the business's IT department and is a great reason to make the Oracle conversion. It is a lot easier to work with, repair, and work around the flaws of software if it's workings and its flaws and hidden features are understandable. A database manual won't provide nearly as much information to the technicians working on a database as the actual source code. Your programmer can explain that this ability to view and manipulate the source code is important.

Coders have a trouble-free time building patches and making repairs than open source. Basically, there are three methods for programmers to fix software. The coder can build another piece of software to monitor the broken software in computer memory and fix the glitch as it occurs. Coders may also use hex editing and recalculating the checksums of the software to patch the binary file. Hex editing and monitoring software implementation are both time consuming tasks, and it may be simpler for programmers to simply write a new program. Lastly, the programmer could change the source code, rewriting it not to have a bug in it. Rewriting the source code is the simplest method, but is only possible with open source software.

Open source database software is also more efficient. This feature is the end gain of the additional programmers who maintain and update open source code on their own time and also the ability of anyone to fix source code problems. In reality, open source code has fewer bugs in it and be more reliable to work with in a database. In fact, major companies will work with their own open source options for software and data bases. Small businesses will learn that open source code makes things more stable and makes it easier to rewrite the code and change a project they are working on whenever they want.

There are plenty of reasons to switch to an open source database. This list of benefits has just scratched the surface. While you may only need a company to handle the database migration and maintenance, using open source code makes the entire process of maintaining a database that much easier for the company you hire.
